WVRHEP/AHEC Rotation FAQ

Q:When is my WVRHEP/AHEC orientation?
A:The WVRHEP/AHEC Orientation varies from consortium to consortium.  However most orientations are completed on the first day of the rotation.  The student should contact the local consortium office at least 7 days before the rotation start date.  Contact information for all Consortia is listed on the WVRHEP/AHEC Website.
 Q:Where can a student find directions to the local consortium office and/or my rotations site?
A:Directions to all WVRHEP/AHEC offices and WVRHEP/AHEC sites are listed on the WVRHEP/AHEC website. Directions can also be requested from the local consortium office.
Q:Is there housing?
A:Yes, there is free housing if available for all WVRHEP/AHEC students at all WVRHEP/AHEC Consortium Some sites can accommodate families.  Contact the local consortium office for specific availability.  
Q:How do I get the WVRHEP/AHEC student house key? 
A:Students should contact the local Site Coordinator at least 7 days before their rotation start date to make arrangements to pick up the house key. 
Q:Is there a housing deposit?
A:Most WVRHEP/AHEC Consortia require a small deposit that is due when house keys are issued. Most deposits are fully refundable to the student if nothing is damaged during the student's stay.
 Q:Are pets allowed? 
A:Most sites do not allow pets.  Look on the WVRHEP/AHEC website for sites that welcome pets.
Q:What amenities come with housing? 
A:Most WVRHEP/AHEC student houses offer cable, Internet, and telephones.  To find out more about particular WVRHEP/AHEC Student houses please visits the individual consortium websites or call the Site Coordinator.
Q:Do I have to do Community Based service learning projects?
A:Yes, many types of community based service-learning projects are available at all WVRHEP/AHEC sites.  If the student has an interest in a particular health topic they should convey this information to their Coordinator.  Service learning projects are ways students can learn more about their rural rotation community.  Students not only teach community members but learn from them as well.
Q:Do I need to participate in Interdisciplinary Activities? 
A:All WVRHEP/AHEC students are required to participate in interdisciplinary activities.  Special exceptions may be made depending on the student's circumstances.
Q:Are there other options than attending Interdisciplinary Session (IDS)?
A:Yes, students may be involved in the online SOLE project if offered through their WVRHEP/AHEC site.  Students may be asked to be involved in interdisciplinary experiences during their rotations, which can count as IDS time.  All students should discuss their interdisciplinary options with the local consortium office.
Q:How much time does a student spend doing community based service learning projects and attending Interdisciplinary Activities?  
A:The requirements for service learning and interdisciplinary activities are 20% of their rotation time; the remainder of the student's time is spent at the clinical rotation site. 
Q:What is expected of a student while on rotation at a WVRHEP/AHEC site? 
A:Students are given a unique opportunity to rotate in some of the most rural and medically underserved areas of West Virginia. The student will be spending a great deal of time with the rural preceptor as well as participating in community based service-learning activities in the community.   The students will also be involved in interdisciplinary discussions and activities. 
Q:How do I contact the Site Coordinator?  
A:All WVRHEP/AHEC Coordinator's contact information is located on the WVRHEP/AHEC website. Additionally, allCampus Coordinators have this information. 
Q:How do I provide feedback?
A:Students can complete the on-line SERFE evaluation beginning one week before their rotation is scheduled to end.  The student should log onto "TRACKER" at www.WVRHEP/AHEC.org, click on the "TRACKER" option, go to "STUDENTS" section and select discipline and school then enter your unique student identifier and "LOGIN".  Student may also give feedback to the site coordinator. 
Q:Is there Internet access available?
A:Internet access is available at most rotation sites, student houses and local consortium offices.
