Boot Camp Intervention


Description of the Project:

Cardiac Boot Camp is an interventional project for children identified in the CARDIAC Screenings or in patients at Robert C. Byrd Clinic that are obese and/or have other co-morbid conditions associated with obesity or high cholesterol.

(Available to students in Southeastern Consortium).

Purpose of the Study

This is a five week interventional project that works with children and families to reduce obesity and other co morbid conditions.

It is held at the Robert C. Byrd Clinic and is taught by the WVU Extension Agent."A New You" is the program presented that deals with self-esteem, nutrition, and physical activities.Check with WVRHEP Office for times.

What we expect from you at the screening

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Exercise demonstration/discussion
  • Interact withfamilies on a personal level and offer support
  • Understanding and interpreting lab tests

Target Audience:

Pediatric Patients and Parents referred by CARDIAC or from Robert C. Byrd Clinic

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this service-learning project, I will be able to:

1.  Participate in an intervention forobese families that will allow me to learn about interaction with children and families and specific clinical competencies such as blood pressure, physical activity, nutrition and lab testing.

2.  Describe how this project fits into West Virginia's public health agenda as articulated in the WV Healthy People 2010 Objectives

ASSIGNMENT

What physical activities can be promoted for parents who are morbidly obese?

1.  How can obese parents participate with their children in activities that are fun for both?

2.  What are the cultural beliefs about foods and eatingin this population?

3.  What is the overall level of motivation for improving health behavior among the participants?

4.  Understanding the struggles of dealing with obesity.

5.  What methods does the program, "A New You" use to promote improving health?

6.  Evaluate and understand barriers to the dental health of the participants.

7.  Understand the barriers to preventive care and access to health insurance for this population.

8.  What are the requirements, including lab results, for families to be referred to the program?
