Call to order:
Motion to

April conducted
a roll call of those in attendance.
Committee Reviews and Group reports:
Recruitment and Retention:
The Health
Sciences Scholarship Program received an increased appropriation of $100,000
from the Legislature. The intent of that
increase is to allow the program to move into the mental health fields.
At the March
meeting, the committee asked three Psychology programs to present and at the
committee meeting today they had a presentation from licensed Clinical Social
Workers.
Schools Committee:
Carla See
reported that the Medical Schools Subcommittee was organized within the
committee to discuss the medical schools information.
We are in the
process of writing a DRAFT Policy 2008-03 titled "Guidelines for
Service-Learning Projects for Health Profession Students". The
Joint Community Outreach and Curriculum Committee, Schools and the Coordinators
and Center Directors will have the responsibility of implementing the policy,
but the oversight will be on the Joint Community Outreach and Curriculum
Committee.
A major issue that is in discussion at the
moment within the committees, is that of health profession students that are in
the community conducting procedures. The
committees are in agreement that there needs to be language within the policy
stating that medical profession students are not to perform procedures without
a licensed health professional present.
This is not to say that the health professions student must be supervised
from someone from their own discipline.
A licensed nurse can oversee the procedures of a medical student, for
example. The committee continues to work
on the language of the policy for submission to the Advisory Panel for
approval.
Special
Presentation:
CARDIAC Project
The video was not able to be presented
during the Web AT Conference due to technical difficulties.
The video can be
seen at this link: http://www.cardiacwv.org/videos/Award_07.wmv.
Derrick Day will
also be sending out an e-mail with the link to those that participated in the
meeting.
Hilda Heady did
report that Dr. Neal's CARDIAC research data has shown a decrease in the
kindergarten and second grade numbers in obese children screened. They have now
fallen into the overweight category which is a good indication.
Hilda also
requested to present information on returning Veterans to the committee at the
AHEC
Sandra Pope
announced that AHEC was awarded a grant of $533787 for the Northern
WV Rural Health Education Centers
(NWVRHEC) and Central Counties AHEC. She also reported that AHEC is also also in
the process of submitting a grant application for Model State Supported
funding, which will be due in January 2009. The due date of the Federal
Progress Report was changed and is now due in August. The outcomes data
has to be submitted at this time, but the progress report narrative portion
will not be due until February 2009.
