(Dan Brody/Jonathan Kline) Minutes Approved.

Old Business:

Dr. Dan Doyle’s poster on Teaching Communication Skills has been displayed at the WVRHEP/AHEC Advisory Panel November 12, 2007.  We are going to try and make the poster available at Rural Health Day at the West Virginia State Capitol during a legislative session on January 28, 2008.  Jacki Novacich is looking into equipment or a proper way to display the poster.

Rural Health Day at West Virginia State Capital Building in Charleston is set for January 28, 2008.  This year we will be exhibiting displays on the Senate side of the rotunda. Due to the moving of the annual dinner and awards banquet, the house side was not available to us, and will be occupied by Wyoming County, West Virginia.

Discussion of Presentation – Introduction to RHEP/AHEC January 15, 2008:

The committee reviewed last year’s presentation, and after discussion made updates to the presentation.  The members of the committee that are presenting this on January 15, 2008 will meet at 11:00 AM in room 1905 of the Health Sciences Center to review and rehearse the presentation.

Evaluation of the presentation: The same format used in previous years will be used this year as well to evaluate components of the presentation.  Nearly 400 students are expected to attend the presentation.

Faculty Development Conference 2008:

The Dental Conference was scheduled for March 7, 2008.  Dr. Meckstroth explained that the Dental Conference needed to be cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later time, due to the state chapter of Academy of General Dentistry having their conference that same weekend.  Dr. Meckstroth indicated he hopes to hold the conference the same weekend that West Virginia University School of Dentistry holds their Alumni weekend in April for the field faculty to participate.

SOLE Module Instruction:

Discussion on possibly expanding the session to include more invited guests and to lengthen the session time.   Also, the committee discussed what to include in the instruction session and how to have the information presented for maximum learning capability.  The outcome was to make the session as hands-on as possible. The participants should bring a laptop if they have one accessible to them.  Dan and Jill will walk them through the SOLE Module while those in the Faculty Development Committee that have experience using the module can walk around and offer assistance.  The session will begin at 6:00 PM allowing half an hour for dinner with 6:30 PM to 8:30PM being the actual time of the session.

April will work on an invitation that will be sent out to Site Coordinators, AHEC directors, and will ask them to recruit field faculty they feel will want to learn SOLE and possibly facilitate SOLE in the future.

WV.   Rosemarie Cannarella, MD, MPH, Eastern WV Rural Health Education Consortium, Martinsburg, WV will present a session on three minute precepting tips, which will be the lead-in to a break-out session for the participants to use the tips and practice them with student acted role playing.  Facilitators will be provided training for the session, and participants will be provided with communication competency tools for feedback delivery.

Faculty Development Committee members were asked to create cases that represent different disciplines, and ask students if they would be willing to participate in the acted role playing.  We would need 1 or 2 students from each discipline.  Cases are to be submitted to April Vestal at avestal@hsc.wvu.edu by Monday January 21, 2008.  Also, they are to look in their discipline for communication competency tools or checklists and have those to April in a week as well.
