Committee Reports
Legislative Day Update was given by April. The RHEP/AHEC areas will have joint exhibits with an interactive activity. The boxed lunches are being sponsored again and Georgianna handed out a list for each SC who was asked to look over the list and see if there were legislators that they really wanted to visit not on the list. She then made notes to accommodate the changes. A new list will be emailed later in the week. It was announced that Truman Chafin will be presenting a Rural Health Resolution on the floor of the Senate while Brent Boggs will introduce the group in the House.
Guest Speakers – Nannette VanDyke-McDonald from the School of Nursing discussed the preceptors for Nursing. She announced that Robin Worbel works with her and that more BSN nurses are needed to precept the senior nursing students that come out from WVU SON.
Gina Carbonara and Jenny Ostien from the School of Pharmacy were on hand to discuss the IPPE accreditation and its implications on the Pharmacy rotations.
New Business – Georgianna discussed and handed out registration forms for the Wellness Policy Workshops that are being presented around the state for school wellness policy groups. Workshops will be held in RESA II & III, RESA VII, RESA VI and RESA I. SC’s are invited to attend.
There was then a short discussion held on the agreements that local consortiums have with preceptors. Those agreements and/or contracts were shared among the group.
Office of Rural Health
Hilda reported that the AHEC grant has been submitted and was rewritten to reflect the decision of MUSOM not to participate in AHEC beginning in September 2008.
GEC program activities for Oct 07- Jan 08 are to be reported by those participating. There will be a GEC meeting on Tuesday following the Legislative activities in Charleston. Dr. Mark Newbrough is the new director and more information will be forthcoming as that program gets up and running.
The Legislative Dinner committee has raised $33,000 and has received reservations from about 400 attending. The RHEP/AHEC awards will be presented by Hilda prior to dinner so that the after dinner program will focus on the ERT Award and honoring President Tomblin. Confirmation has been received from the Governor and First Lady Manchin, Former Gov. Gaston Caperton as well as Senator Lloyd Jackson who will act as Master of Ceremonies.
Hilda then noted that the $600,000 for the AHEC programs is in the Governor’s “asking budget” as Federal Backfill funding. No additional money is included for RHEP. We need to ask for support of the budget as it relates to Rural Health programs in HEPC. This still must be approved.
Critique comments were shared by Chuck. Boxed lunches were available and the meeting adjourned about 11:45 AM.
