Updates:

                Office of Rural Health

Hilda Heady reported that last year we received an additional $100,000 in the Health Sciences Scholarship program to specifically review rural mental health.  The Recruitment and Retention committee approved this fund to mental health practitioners, limiting the scope of eligibility to doctorial level psychologists, and licensed Social Workers.  The issue is that this limits the number of students to access the program.  The Recruitment and Retention Committee has formed a committee that will review placement opportunities.  If you know of any licensed Social Workers, Psychologist, and/or Psychiatrists in your area that are either in private practice or work with a primary care center, please send their information to Hilda Heady at hheady@hsc.wvu.edu.  The information she is requesting:

·        Names of those you know would be willing to take students

·        Information about their location and how busy is their practice or center

·        They have to be engaged in clinical service

·        Please look at your rural none urban (restricted) area's first.  If needed we will look at the urban areas later.

Dr. Richard Meckstroth contacted Hilda concerning the lack of response to the March of Dimes Grant and the Save Face grants.   Why were there no more than 5 people interested?

The response was that some sites had time constraints, and staff constraints for the grant requirements.  Some experienced mixed signals when calling his office and asking about the grants.  The person answering the phones stated there were no grants available.

Hilda was asked by Delegate Fleischauer to bring a proposal to the interim in December on recommendations coming out of the West Virginia veterans study.  Hilda is currently working on a proposal to develop a certification program for primary care providers on post deployment health.  Hilda will be in contact with Delegate Fleischauer for information on moving forward in December.   If accepted, we will be looking at piloting the certification program in at least 2 regions.  If you know of primary care providers who may be interested, please e-mail Hilda at hheady@hsc.wvu.edu.

Hilda, Margaret Novacich and Rose McCluskey are also working on a research grant for Mental Health, on Community based programs serving returning Iraqi and Afghanistan War veterans and families.  The research would be recruiting National Guardsman and families from four different states, with a goal of at least 400 family units participating for a longitudinal survey.  The four states would be West Virginia, Minnesota, Maine, and an urban control, Long Island.    The surveys will mostly be online, and they will have to identify what programs in their communities they have accessed and how well they helped them.   One program in particular we will specifically targeting with be the Yellow Ribbon programs provided by the National Guard.  This grant application is due May 1, 2009.

                AHEC

Sandra Pope reported that congress is currently in recess and will return November17, 2008.  She and Hilda will be in Washington D.C. November 19-22 for the The National Area Health Education Center Organization (NAO) meetings, and are looking to meet with Senator Rockefeller and Senator Byrd.  The NAO will be discussing Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Standards of Excellence Certification.   This topic was ranked as being the highest of interest for discussion.  Sandra will report more to the committee on the details of this meeting upon return.

Just as reminder, the National Rural Health Association's (NRHA)Policy Institute will be holding meetings January 26-28, 2009 in Washington D.C..  Lew Holloway will be attending as the incoming West Virginia Rural Health Association President.  If you plan to attend the meetings in Washington D.C., please contact Lew at lew.holloway@nwvrhec.org .  Lew's office will be scheduling hill visits for the WV Delegation.

The WVAHEC office is still gathering information to complete the grant application for 2009.

The application is due January 13, 2009.

                RHEP

April reported that Margaret Novacich sent an e-mail out concerning quarterly reports that were due 10-31-08.   She has not received many, and has requested that you please turn in the reports by Friday, November 14, 2008.  If you will be unable, or have questions regarding the reports, please contact Margaret at mnovacich@hsc.wvu.edu or by phone at 304-293-1444.

Kristi Pritt sent out the final draft of the housing report.  She would like for you to review the reports and contact her with any corrections.

Work continues on creating the new criteria and rubrics for the Partnership Awards for March 2, 2009.  The committee is planning to have the award information available around December 1, 2008.

The Annual Dinner Committee will plan to meet by conference call to discuss fund raising and dinner events.  More information regarding the call will follow at a later date.

The Annual Dinner Save the Date cards will be sent out within the next couple of weeks.

The WVSOM Rural Fair will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008.  A coordinator meeting  is being planned for the morning with the fair to follow 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM.  If you have any questions please contact Patti Crawford at pcrawford@wvsom.edu.

The WVU Rural Fair will be held Monday, January 26, 2009 at the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center.  There will be a coordinator meeting in the morning with the fair to follow 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.  If you have any questions, please contact Jacki Novacich at jnovacich@hsc.wvu.edu.

The Faculty Development Committee met October 6, 2008 and discussed the possibility of regionalizing the conference in hopes of raising attendance and lessening the cost by not hosting the event at a hotel or conference center.  They will focus on regional training in 2009 around the state.  Field Faculty will be working on creating the 6 different modules at this time and will present 2 modules in 4 different areas.  No exact dates have been set, and April will relay information as it comes.

Legislative Issues:

                Updates:

Hilda and Lew continue to meet with legislators with coordinators and center directors.

Make sure you contact Lew or Hilda with updates on your visits.

                Legislative Day Committee Update:

The committee is in the process of developing ideas for Rural Health Day at the Capitol.  We

We have the entire rotunda reserved this year and need to make sure we fill the space. The committee would like to invite RHEP/AHEC partners, e.g. schools that participate in the program, hospitals and clinics, to display at the Capitol.    April plans to meet with Hilda and Sandra to discuss this further.

The committee is also developing a message that would be linked to the displays and people presenting that would unify everyone, and would be displayed in the Capitol.   They have developed three different messages they would like the Joint committee to vote.  This will be sent out by email and the group will be asked to vote on their preference.  Look for a message in the coming weeks describing how to vote.  Once a winner has been chosen, we will send the winning message out to everyone.

Some suggested items that would display the message are, banners, buttons, display signs, labels on the lunches, and hand spray sanitize pens.

Retreat Committee Update

The retreat is scheduled for May 20-22, 2009.  The committee has decided to have the Joint Committee meet Wednesday, and have a follow up meeting on Friday.  Kim Colebank that spoke at the September meeting has agreed to join us for the retreat, but would like some feedback on how we would like for her to tailor her presentation and activities.  The Joint Committee decided that they would like Kim to tailor her presentation to Training on Learning Objectives for Service-Learning.    A subcommittee was developed to contact and meet with Kim on developing the training.  The committee is comprised of April Vestal, Kendra Sullivan, Malinda Turner, and Amber Crist.
